Boiler Plant Upgrade
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Atlanta, GA
EMC provided design and construction phase services to upgrade the original 40 year old Central Boiler Plant at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta Georgia. The rapid addition of new laboratory facilities on the CDC campus was quickly using up excess Central Boiler Plant capacity. EMC was asked
to design modifications to increase plant capacity from 135,000 pounds per hour (PPH) to 200,000 pounds per hour, and to replace aging systems to improve reliability and extend the useful life of the facility.
Expansion of the facility included replacement of a 15,000 PPH field-erected
boiler with a new 80,000 PPH packaged boiler, a new
dearerator tank, new feed water pumps, and a new steam header. The new boiler was equipped with a low NOx (30 PPM) burner with flue gas recirculation to meet clean air requirements in the Atlanta area.
As part of the plant upgrade EMC also modified an existing 40,000 PPH boiler to improve firing performance, efficiency and reduce air emissions. The modification included a new wind box, forced draft fan, low NOx burner with flue gas recirculation, fuel train, and burner controls.
EMC also designed provisions for a temporary boiler to connect to the plant fuel, feedwater, and steam systems to provide an uninterrupted steam supply to the campus while the new boiler was being installed.
